LAKE TAHOE—U.S. Forest Service officials this week said prescribed fire operations would begin within the next two weeks at locations on both the north and south ends of Lake Tahoe. Prescribed burns will continue throughout the winter as conditions permit.

Burn areas are located near Incline Village on Lake Tahoe’s north shore, and near Fallen Leaf Lake and South Lake Tahoe on the lake’s south shore.

Some smoke will be present in the areas of the fires, but officials said, “prescribed fire smoke is generally less intense and of much shorter duration than smoke produced by wildland fires.”

Before burning begins members of the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team will be coordinating with local air quality and weather agencies to ensure conditions are favorable. They’ll also conduct test burns to ensure conditions are right, they said.

Signage will be posted along roadways in affected areas.
