LAS VEGAS — The campus of Las Vegas High School was recently listed by the National Park Service on the National Register of Historic Places. The 15-acre downtown campus along with 11 buildings is included in the listing.
The first buildings on the campus were built in 1930, and additional buildings were added until the last major addition in 1971. The campus now also houses the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts.
“The historic buildings that make up the Las Vegas High School campus are like postcards from the past, representing many differing eras of architecture,” Rebecca Palmer, administrator of the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office, said. “Even more important are the school’s educational contributions to generations of Nevadans. This designation recognizes the school’s place in Nevada history and helps preserve its unique past.”
Locations on the National Register of Historic Places must have historical or cultural significance, and through inclusion on the list have the opportunity to apply for grant funding and tax incentives aimed at protecting the locations for the future.
Other Las Vegas locales on the list include the El Cortez Hotel and Casino on Fremont Street, Huntridge Theater, Las Vegas Grammar School and the Little Church of the West. A complete list of Nevada’s Historic Places is here.
