CARSON CITY– Education support staff may get a financial lifeline this summer if an emergency regulation proposed by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) is approved. The regulation would allow them to apply for unemployment benefits over the summer as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
DETR gained authority to propose such emergency regulations with the passage of SB 3 during the 32nd Special Legislative Session in August 2020. Now, with provisions included in the American Rescue Plan, which was passed by Congress in early March, the federal government will cover up to 75% of the cost for reimbursable employers, of which school districts are included.
Covered educational support staff—those employed by county school districts, charter schools or private elementary or secondary schools licensed in the state—can apply for unemployment insurance once the current school year is completed. All other eligibility requirements apply, and benefits would only be collected for weeks of unemployment while the regulation is effective.
